The aim of the study was to assess the Bay's environmental health, identify the influencing factors and determine how best to manage the Bay in the long-term. On completion in 1996 Port Phillip Bay was the most scientifically understood marine environment in Australia.

Who And What Was Involved?

The Port Phillip Bay Environmental Study was funded by Melbourne Water and Melbourne Parks and Waterways and managed by CSIRO. Other government agencies involved in the study were the Environment Protection Authority, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Port of Melbourne Authority. Scientists from 29 research institutions around Australia and overseas undertook more than 40 major research tasks as part of the Study. A number of advanced computer models were developed as part of the four year Study. The models will be used to predict the outcomes of different environmental inputs and factors. Several of the models, and other research tools, were specially designed for the Study. The cost of the four-year study was $12 million, a significant investment in the future of a priceless natural asset.

Major Areas Of Study

The ecology and health of the Bay - the range and abundance of plant and animal life and how species interact.
The physical processes - how water and suspended matter move around the Bay and how seasonal and climatic changes impact on it.
Nutrients and toxicants - where they come from, how much there is and their impacts.
